Wow, so hi all. [livejournal.com profile] theweaselking sparked a serious growth in my readership. Blame will be apportioned later.

Since eleventybillionandone of you now reading are familiar with my family from years past, a quick update on how everyone is:

Annette -- lovely as ever. She's now teaching at a private grade school (Pre-K through 8th grade) as their computer instructor. She's also attending a local university to finish her degree. Currently recuperating from ankle surgery to remove a ganglion cyst (OK, so she's actually pretty much recuperated, just doing physical therapy now, but it sounds better that way.)

Tynan -- now taller than Annette, sporting peach fuzz and gallivanting about St. Louis on his class trip. Alternates between surly and psychotic, AKA "The Teenager". Heir to the throne left vacant by, well, nobody, since I'm still alive. Starts 9th grade this fall.

Ian -- 4 year old geek in training. Known to walk up to complete strangers, introduce himself and his brother, and wheedle entire life stories out of people in under 2 minutes. My heart attack waiting to happen, but an absolute joy to be around. Loves computers to pieces, sometimes literally.

So, how's everyone out there?

Ah yes, the Teenager. Got one of those myself. Let's see, what's happened since you last popped your head up? Um..

Bought a house last year. Hair has only just grown back from that whole circus. Now sinking stupid sums of money, blood, sweat, tears and time into maintaining/fixing/improving things. Alexander is 13 now, and a cellist. Ernest is 9, and a hard-core geek. Working part-time from home for a certain search company. Love my work, but am convinced the people running the show are idiots.

You know. The usual.

Let's see...

I've started working towards my Black belt in Tae Kwon Do, otherwise, I'm still just a bored, tired, cynical, and sarcastic systems admin.

Robin: Still teaching spec. ed., hasn't thrown me out yet, and still going back and forth on whether to do the doctorate thing or not.

Evan: Six year old geek in training, Brown belt, first grader, and all around nifty kid.

Here, let me simplify that horribly redundant sentence for you: "I'm still just a systems admin."

At College Park, working on an engineering doctorate, and thrilled by your description of your four-year old as "Loves computers to pieces, sometimes literally."

Glad Annette is recovering fast.

I have probably 20 computer carcasses of varying vintage in the house, since I'm a packrat and a geek. Ian + Philips screwdriver + old computers == lots'o'parts. At least he's learning what those bits inside actually do.

I'm not doing too shabbily; live in a nice place, have a job, am addicted to a computer game that I thought I'd never play. Sigh.

So...you're coming up for Memorial Day, right? Sain Louiiiiiiiiiieeee isn't all that far...

Er... sorry. I thought that YOU were in or near Saint Louis, since your son was gallivanting through it and all.

So, uh, where the crap are you?

Tennessee still. ~300 miles to St. Louis for me. It sounded like there was a DFS or somesuch planned :)

So you're in SL now, not Chicago?

Argh...no no no, I'm in Chicago. But I thought you were in Dallas, which is significantly further from Chicago than Saint Louis.

Boy did I screw this up!

Anyway. Tennessee's a sight further from Chicago than Saint Louis is, but hey, if you wanna come to a smallish Memorial Day social (Pam, John, Mike, Anne, Maggie, Stina, Mike, Matt, me), feel free to shoot me an email to k c a v n e s s @ c o m c a s t . n e t. Personally, I'd hold out for a larger one, and one closer to you, like, say, Toledo.

Well, I'm going to Milwaukee with Annette on 2 July for my 20th HS reunion, which necessitates a trip *through* Chicago. Perhaps we can get a mini-social dinner on the 3rd arranged.

Kenn's confused. He's mistaking your older's current field trip destination as your humble abode's locale.

So what's going on in St. Louis on Memorial Day?

And what game are you playing?

See above response to your deleted reply (why did you delete it? It seemed perfectly respectable...)

I've been playing World of Warcraft since December. The game...sob...doesn't end...

Am about to post a song meme, come and play!

Got my degree. Now I work for My Beloved Corporate Masters and don't actually use my degree for anything in practice, but make a decent living. My recent hobbies include Muay Thai, weightlifting, and playing insane videogames.

Awesome to see you over here! (This is Amy Yost.)

Let's see...graduated in December 2003, working for everyone's favorite enormous multinational tech company, bought a house last September, developed extremely aggressive and so far uncontrollable rheumatoid arthritis in February, and married Jef (who you met at Loy2K, IIRC) on April 30. Things have been exciting.

Got out of grad school, hung out with the D.C. crowd for awhile, but the job market being what it was, was forced to move back to Texas to find something to live on. Am now gainfully employed in an environmental analytical lab.

Dude! You're alive! Nifty!

How am I? Short version: finished grad school, moved to Los Angeles for 2 years, to Philadelphia for 8 months, am now back in Chicago, working at a startup tech firm. Wandering the earth was fun for a while, but I'm glad to be back home.

*snicker*

You really need to have lived in NYC, just to round out Mugger's Row of "Places to Live in USA".

Glad you're back in Chi-town safe-n-sound.
